House Democrats on the Select Committee for Benghazi and the CIA are on the attack once more this week, after the CIA debunked statements made by Representative Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) in relation to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s emails.

Trey-Gowdy-Face-the-NationOpTop-ranking Democrat on the Select Committee, Representative Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) is now calling on Rep. Gowdy to apologize to Secretary Clinton for his false statements made in a 13-page letter that the former Secretary of State sent an email containing “some of the most protected information in our intelligence community, the release of which could jeopardize not only national security but human lives.”

The CIA has stated that information deemed classified by Gowdy was never classified by the CIA. Gowdy then used the email as a political talking point in order to further attack the former secretary, which Rep. Cummings finds irreprehensible.

In a letter to Gowdy, Rep. Cummings stated:

In your letter on October 7, 2015, you stated that Secretary Clinton received an email from Sidney Blumenthal on March 18, 2011, that included the name of someone who purportedly provided information to the CIA. You asserted that this information was classified, arguing that Secretary Clinton “received classified information from Blumenthal—information she should have known was classified at the time she received it.” You then alleged:

“Armed with that information, Secretary Clinton forwarded that email to a colleague—debunking her claim that she never sent any classified information from her private email address.”

In your letter, you went to great lengths to highlight the gravity of your accusation, stating:

This information, the name of a human source, is some of the most protected information in our intelligence community, the release of which could jeopardize not only national security but human lives.

To further inflate your claim, you placed your own redactions over the name of the individual with the words, “redacted due to sources and methods.” To be clear, these redactions were not made, and these words were not added, by any agency of the federal government responsible for enforcing classification guidelines.

Predictably, commentators began repeating your accusations in even more extreme terms, suggesting in headlines for example that “Clinton Burns CIA Libya Contact.”

Contrary to your claims, the CIA yesterday informed both the Republican and Democratic staffs of the Select Committee that they do not consider the information you highlighted in your letter to be classified. Specifically, the CIA confirmed that “the State Department consulted with the CIA on this production, the CIA reviewed these documents, and the CIA made no redactions to protect classified information.”

While the investigation may have started for the right reasons, if the House Republicans can’t figure out after eight investigations that this tragedy can’t be pinned on any one person, then they need to let the four Americans who died in the tragedy rest in peace.

These revelations keep coming in one after another. It was only a few weeks ago when Democrats finally got their break in the form of a gaffe uttered by Republican Majority Leader Representative Kevin McCarthy when he went on Sean Hannity’s show and admitted that the Select Committee on Benghazi was designed to tarnish Clinton’s reputation in order to hurt her chances for being President.

Here’s what McCarthy said exactly:

“Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because she’s untrustable [sic]. But no one would’ve known any of that had happened had we not fought and made that happen.”

Ever since this admission, Trey Gowdy has been scrutinized for turning his attention towards Clinton’s emails.

And then former committee members started admitting McCarthy’s gaffe was true.

Former Benghazi committee investigator Maj. Bradley Podliska admitted that the Select Committee had focused almost solely on Clinton. Gowdy then called Maj. Podliska a “lousy employee” which violated federal law, because Gowdy was not supposed to disclose the details of Podliska’s employment.

Then Representative Richard Hanna (R-NY) also admitted that McCarthy had it right, saying, “This may not be politically correct, but I think that there was a big part of this investigation that was designed to go after people and an individual, Hillary Clinton.”

With this newest revelation that Gowdy classified information in Clinton’s emails and then turned around and accused the former Secretary of putting national security in jeopardy, things are not looking good for Gowdy.

Once the Democrats regain control of the House, it will be high time to form a different Select Committee and conduct an investigation into improper use of taxpayer dollars in order to play politics with Clinton’s career.
